We are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received upon the passing of our dear friend and Pastor Monsignor Thomas Kenny.  He was our leader, our spiritual guide and only through his stewardship of our parish were we able to accomplish so many wonderful things.

Condolences have come in from nearly every corner of the earth. We have spoken with many and have heard from so many more the tales of the man, and his commitment to our parish and Christ’s church here on earth. Without great surprise they all remember Monsignor, as we do:  a great spiritual leader never weary in the stewardship of his flock, a dedicated clergyman, a dear friend, and a man of unending compassion and faith.

Many of the memorial events held for Monsignor filled our facilities to their capacity. We are certain Monsignor would have been pleased with the number of volunteers, clergy and staff who willingly gave of their time and talent to insure all of these events provided an appropriate atmosphere we the mourning to commemorate our pastor.

As we continue to make our way through this life without him, Monsignor would not want us sad or discouraged.  Rather he would have us continue to follow our mission; to know, to love and to serve as Jesus Christ did. For it was this mission that Monsignor so strived for in every day of his life.

During the early morning hours of October 30, our beloved Shepherd and rector of the Cathedral, Monsignor Thomas Kenny, died peacefully and mercifully in his sleep, passing on to his eternal reward. Our prayers go out to the family of Monsignor Kenny and we ask for your prayers for the repose of his soul and for our parish family.

A native of County Sligo, Ireland, Monsignor came to Atlanta in 1965 as a newly ordained priest.  His first assignment was at the Cathedral where he served for two years, winning the love and admiration of the parishioners.  After many more assignments in parishes throughout the Archdiocese, including St. Michael's in Gainesville and Corpus Christi in Stone Mountain, he joyfully returned to the Cathedral as rector in 1990.

His clear vision and humble heart again won the hearts of his parish family and all those with whom he came in contact. Under his leadership, the Cathedral grew fourfold, as people came to love and admire Monsignor's great gifts for shepherding the Cathedral.  His devotion to his vocation was evident in all he did - he lived his life for the glory of God.

A humble man with a brilliant mind A simple man who loved every imaginable electronic gadget An admitted introvert whose presence filled a room when he entered Elevated to Monsignor status, he preferred to be called Fr. Kenny One who made everyone feel as though they were his closest friend, their own personal priest. To a dear priest and mentor the following: (shared by him at our own Irish Father's funeral mass) May the blessing of light be with you - Light outside and light within. May sunlight shine upon you and warm your heart 'til it glows like a great peat fire so that the stranger may come and warm himself by it, and also a friend. May a blessed light shine out of the two eyes of you like a candle set in two windows of a house, bidding the wanderer to come in out of the storm. May the blessing of rain - the sweet, soft rain - fall upon your spirit and wash it fair and clean. May it leave many a shining pool where the blue of heaven shines, and sometimes a star. May the blessing of earth - the good rich earth - be with you. May you ever have a kindly greeting for those you pass as you go along its roads. May the earth be soft under you when you rest upone it, tired at the end of the day. May earth rest easy over you when at last you lie under it. May the earth rest so lightly over you that your spirit may be out from under it quickly, And up, and off, and on its way to God. RIP our dear friend and priest.

I will forever remember Fr. Kenny's lilting gaelic accent reciting our wedding vows and at the baptisms of both of my sons. He was a sweet man with a great personality. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing but I know he is at peace.

We just learned of Monsignor Kenney's passing. We know that he is with the Lord. Monsignor Kenny will always be in our hearts. We moved from Stone Mountain in 1984. We have not had the pleasure of finding another Pastor that has the love that he had for his flock. He led us through some tough times in our lives. He was a man who always saw the good in all things. We will miss his annual Christmas Card. But his great homilies have lived with us and will continue to live with us. We will miss him.

Monsignor Kenny lived his baptismal vows. Upon hearing of his death, my memory went back to when I came to the Cathedral. He was a man who believed in God's truth and mercy, lived it, and preached it! Today's early morning reading from the book of the prophet Joel (2:21-3:5) reminds me of Monsignor. I can hear his voice (always guiding to the truth in love), "Fear not, O land! Exult and rejoice! for the Lord has done great things..." a moments pause, then another reflection "...everyone shall be rescued who calls on the name of the Lord; For...there shall be a remnant, as the Lord has said, And in Jerusalem survivors whom the Lord shall call." Then, a final note (to remind us to keep focused) from the Responsory Luke (21:25, 31; Mark 13:33) - "...Be on your guard and pray, for you do not know when the time will come." Thank you God, for the time I was able to be Shepherd by your humble and faithful servant.
