This year Monsignor had encouraged the stewardship committee to focus on increasing the number of pledges received in our annual stewardship of the treasure drive, Sharing God’s Gifts. Never a pastor to underestimate his flock Monsignor’s goal was no less than 100% participation. Knowing all that we have comes from our heavenly Father, Monsignor encouraged us to share our gifts to grow His church here on earth.
Monsignor was passionate about stewardship, not so much the quantity of money, but the quantity of your commitment. What were you willing to give back to our God in terms of your commitment of time, talent and treasure? Do we indeed put God first in our list of priorities, or is He merely an afterthought. If you have not done so already please fill out your pledge card and return it today.

In the Acts of the Apostles, we recall that the
very first significant mission of the Apostle Paul
was to take up a collection for those who were
enduring a famine in Jerusalem. From those
first apostolic days, the Christian people have
endeavored to share their resources with one another.
When there was great need, then (as now) the Church
responded in an outpouring of love. Both in the every
day need of proclaiming the Gospel and in the ongoing
apostolic work of the Church, it has been the people
of God who have responded to His call.
The list of benefactors of the Church contains billions
of souls, all of them Christians like yourselves, who gave to
that same Church that people like Paul helped to establish.
Today our Catholic Church remains committed to
doing the work of the Lord right here and right now
in this great American city, as well as in the world.
A cynical person might see this work as unnecessary, but as people of faith we see that every act of generosity is something that may potentially change the world.
The Church is ours, given to us out of love, and as such, we must nourish and support it, for our love of God and for the love we bear the world. Let us give responsibly but generously, for there is no more worthy cause in human history than the work of Christ our Lord.
Your gifts support...
The Cathedral of Christ the King operates solely
through your generosity as you share your gifts of
time, talent and treasure. By completing the enclosed
pledge card you are making your financial commitment
to the support of the parish in 2009. Specifically your
gifts of treasure support the many ministries that give
life and breathe to our parish home.
“As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another
as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10
We Tithe to Serve
Every dollar given in support of God’s
mission is precious in His eyes. While the
tithe is the biblical measure of sharing
our God given gifts, more recently the
bishops, through their pastoral letter “Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response,”
challenge us to be good stewards not only in how much we give away, but in
what we do with all of the gifts we have received from God.

FAQ's
What is Stewardship?
Stewardship is a way of life, a way of thanking God for all His blessings by returning a portion of the time, talentand treasure allotted to us. Stewardship engenders a spirituality that deepens our relationship with the Lord. Stewardship involves intentional, planned and proportionate giving of our time, talent and treasure.
Why do Catholics tithe?
Tithing is based on spiritual principles of the Old Testament (see Sirach 35:7-10, 1 Chronicles 29:14-16, and Deuteronomy 16:16-17 to name a few). In the New Testament, Paul in his writings commonly references our need to properly steward and return to God the gifts He has given to us (see Romans 12:6, 1 Corinthians 16:2 and 2 Corinthians 9:6-7). We tithe to worship and honor God, to receive His blessing, and to increase our faith. It reminds us that all we have belongs to God.
What should I tithe?
As a tithing parish we ask that you use the biblical norm of giving ten percent on all income received.
Some, because of circumstances, give more than that. Others might start at two, three or four percent.
What ministries are supported through my gifts?
All of the ministries of the parish are supported, including but not limited to Liturgy, Evangelization, Outreach, Religious Education, Recreation, Pastoral Care, Hispanic Ministry, Facilities and Administration.
Why is it important to renew our commitment to stewardship of time, talent and treasure on an annual basis in the parish?
Annual Time, Talent and Treasure campaigns allow you, our parishioners, to better match your abilities and gifts with our needs. Both your ability to help and the parish’s needs for that help change regularly. Annual commitments provide us all with the flexibility we need to properly steward our gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Am I expected to give my time, talent and treasure exclusively to the parish?
Giving of time, talent and treasure is not limited to the parish. God calls us to share His gifts with all of His children. There are many Christian causes beyond our parish that need our help. With respect to treasure, one recommended guideline allocates 5% of our tithe amount to parish, 4% to other charities, and 1% to the Archdiocese
Do my gifts support Archdiocesan programs?
A portion of your stewardship is sent to support programs at the Archdiocese. These funds are used by the Archdiocese to support vocations, and the many other ministries funded at the Archdiocesan level such as Catholic Charities, the Office of Religious Education, and Catholic Campus Centers. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal also supports these deserving programs.
How much of my gift goes to Christ the King School?
As a parish school, each year a relatively small amount of those monies sent to the Archdiocese are returned to students of Christ the King School in the form of tuition assistance. A parish scholarship fund also exists for those who wish to provide direct assistance to students at the school.
Can I make gifts of stock or other securities?
The Cathedral can accept gifts of stock or other securities. We recommend you consult with your financial advisor first, and then contact the stewardship office at the Cathedral for further instructions.
Are my gifts tax deductible?
Very often the answer to this question is yes, but we encourage consultation with your tax advisor to be certain.
What if I can't afford to give of my treasure?
There are many volunteer efforts that need your help at the Cathedral as well as in the community at large; as Disciples of Christ, we are called to serve in any way we can. Be thankful for the special gifts God has given you, appreciate them for what they are, and share them to the benefit of His Kingdom here on earth. Finally, we ask that you commit to pray regularly for our stewardship efforts.
Is it important to teach our children about stewardship??
Do your children know to whom you give? Parents who involve their children in this decision-making process teach them early to value generosity. Children of all ages can give of their time and talents in acts of service. Most importantly, we must teach our children that all we have comes from
God, and as good stewards of these gifts we please Him.
